Water Finance Guide
The EUWI Finance Working Group (FWG) is developing a Water Finance Guide (WF Guide) as part of their ambition to foster more transparency with respect to financial mechanisms for the water sector. For the purpose of this WF Guide, the ‘water sector’ is meant to include water supply and sanitation services and integrated water resources management.
Welcome to the Water Finance Guide

Research by the FWG has shown that there is an abundance of information on finance mechanisms for the water sector available, both on paper as well as on the Internet. However, this information is often patchy and anecdotal and both suppliers and potential users lack a solid overview that can help them make informed decisions.
The Water Finance Guide is aimed at becoming this comprehensive collection. It includes such things as:
- An overview of suppliers of financial mechanisms for the water sector, together with their contact information
- An overview of the financial mechanisms of these suppliers and their eligibility criteria
- A glossary of terms
- Case studies of experiences of users of financial mechanisms
- Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)
- Guidelines for application
- User’s opinions
- Links to other interesting and relevant sources of information
The Water Finance Guide is an initiative of the European Water Initiative Finance Working Group.
Future Plans
As a first step, the FWG is providing a Water Finance Guide website. This website is just one channel of communication through which the content of the WF Guide will be available. The website aspires to become the central one-stop-shop on the Internet for water sector financing. On this website you will find most of the elements mentioned above as you can see in the menu bar at the top of the website. A core element of the WF Guide website is a sophisticated and interactive search function found under Sources of Finance. With this tool users can search a large, up to date and continually growing repository of financial mechanisms offered by financing agencies. The tool provides various selection criteria, such as eligibility, region and financing agency, that users can choose from in combination to exactly find those mechanisms that they are interested in. The results include detailed information on the mechanism itself as well as helpful information on the agency and ways to contact them.
Over time, other means of communication will be added next to this website to provide a full breath of different channels for the content of the WF Guide. These other means include such things as:
- Guides on paper or on CD-Rom
- A newsletter
- Events
- A helpdesk
- An electronic forum
- An experts network
